What is IIchan?

IIchan, or Idlechan, is an English-language [imageboard] based on the [Wakaba] board software. Its name has many different meanings:

  • IIchan: Capital "I's" represent the Roman Numeral "II" (2). This is a representation of the original Japanese imageboard 2chan that was the common inspiration for IIchan and for [4chan], IIchan's predecessor and now semi-rival.
  • Idlechan: "Idle" as in waiting. After 4chan was taken offline in June of 2004, the displaced remnants sat in 4chan's separate IRC channel before being invited into another channel labeled "idlechan(nel)", where IIchan was planned and organized from.
  • iichan: "ii" representing the Japanese language "いい", which roughly means okay/good. Despite being primarily English, IIchan has a number of Japanese members who contribute and post.

Origins

[2ch].net is a massive Japanese text-based discussion board famous in Japan. As part of its expansion, the imageboard software known as [Futallaby] was developed and implemented on [2chan].net. The imageboard interface allows and encourages posters to upload images as the main communication medium of the forum with text taking a secondary priority. Unlike text-based forums whose pages would weigh in at about half a [megabyte] for an entire page, a single image could max or exceed that easily. At a time when most forum software provided little or no on-site hosting and relied heavily on dedicated image servers like [deadfrog], [imageshack] and [hotlinking] to various sources on the web to display images on forums, this this was considered a huge risk.

However, upon 4chan's return less than 2 months later, iichan had established it's own userbase, and ended up "competing" with its mother site.
This was not to last, and iichan was closed on October 24th 2004 due to rising bandwidth costs and a lack of funding.
it was slated to return in December, but in February 2005 iichan was permanently no more, and instead merged with another board to create the horrifying weeaboo infestation we see at Wakachan.
IMAGEBOARD : Encyclopedia Entry (903 words)
On 24 October 2004, iichan was closed due to lack of funds and "Wakachan", a distributed network over many servers, was set up in its place.
Born in the iichan oekaki boards, they are entirely unrelated to the other imageboards and are some of the few genuine non-photoshopped art-based memes that English-speaking imageboards have created.
A few members of iichan have banded together to form iitran, a small, loosely organized manga scanlation and anime fansub group, focusing on the works of Kaoru Mori.
