Encyclopedia > Indefinite leave to remain

Indefinite Leave to Remain or ILR, is an immigration status granted to a person who does not hold right of abode in the United Kingdom, but who has been admitted to the UK without any time limit on his stay and who is free to take up employment, without restriction.

Note: Strictly speaking, citizens of countries in the European Economic Area who come to the UK to live or work do not receive indefinite leave to remain. They are admitted with a status defined by Britain's membership in the European Union and the EU's agreement with the other countries that make up the EEA.
