The Game Developers Conference has annually hosted the Independent Games Festival (IGF) since 1999 to reward innovative games produced by independent video game developers as well as full-time college and high school students. For the IGF Mod competition, the deadline is Oct. 13, 2006, and for the Student Showcase, the deadline is Nov. 10, 2006.
The IGF was established in 1998 to encourage innovation in game development and to recognize the best independent game developers, in the way that the Sundance Film Festival has benefited independent filmmakers.
The IGF Student Showcase continues to be one of the most hotly contested parts of the Festival, honoring 10 Student Showcase Winners with $500 travel stipends and an opportunity to show their game at GDC 2007.

All Independent Games Festival finalists will also be playable in the IGF Pavilion at GDC from March 7-9, 2007, alongside the newly announced Independent Games Summit, to take place on March 5 and 6 ahead of the IGF itself, and to discuss the art and science of making great indie games.
There are now three sections of the Independent Games Festival event, for which the prizes will be awarded at GDC 2007, held from March 5-9, 2007 at the Moscone Center in San Francisco, California: the main IGF Competition itself, the IGF Mod Competition, and the IGF Student Showcase.
The main IGF competition has a diverse set of judges which includes representatives from major AAA game publishers and developers, significant independent gaming websites such as GameTunnel and TIGSource, and previous IGF winners and finalists, as well as a number of indie veteran judges from the previous IGF judging pool.
