Fourth Indian division during world war two served first in egypt where with western desert force it fought the italians who had decided to invaded egypt. during this battle the were rushed to british sudan where a further invasion by the italians would threaten the suez canal. On return to egypt the division then took part in the campaign in syria before again being returned to egypt to take part in the north africa campaign, it saw action in all the major battles there and had the honour of capturing general von arnim in tunisia which brought a close to the north africa campaign. the division then moved to Italy where it took part in the battle for Monte cassino amongst others before being sent to Greece to help stabilise the country after the Axis withdrawl.It retunred to India with many honours including Victoria crosses for men from all ranks of the division
