Introduction Indian Institute of Technology (IIT Guwahati or IITG), the sixth member of the IIT fraternity, was established in 1994 and the academic programme commenced in 1995. It is one growing up fast to be one of the most promising engineering research centres in the world today and like other members of the IIT fraternity, it is mainly known for the quality of its undergradutate curriculum. IIT Guwahati campus is unarguably one of the most beautiful campuses in India. Currently IIT Guwahati houses the Departments of Computer Science and Engineering (CSE), Electronics & Communication Engineering (ECE), Biotechnology (BT), Mechanical Engineering (ME), Chemical Engineering (CHE), Civil Engineering (CE), Mathematics (MA), Physics (PH) and Chemistry (CH). IIT-G is also currently home to a very unique Department of Design (DoD) and 6 Centers of Research. Campus IIT Guwahati's campus is on a sprawling 3 km² plot of land on the northern bank of the river Brahmaputra around 20 km from the heart of the Guwahati city. Student Life IIT Guwahati is a fully residential campus. All the students live in hostels located in the campus. All these hostels have single seater spacious rooms and have all the amenities like food mess, canteen, lounges, campus wide lan with internet access etc. The hostels are named after various rivers and tributries of north-east India. Annual Festivals Every year, two major national level festivals are organised by the students of IIT Guwahati. The science and technological festival, Techniche, is held in the odd semester (beginning of September) while the cultural festival, Alcheringa, is held in the even semester (end of January). Alcheringa is the biggest cultural festival of its kind in the entire north-east India and draws huge amounts of crowd from all over India. Apart from the two national level festivals, the students have an intra-iit cultural festival named Manthan, held every year during October. There is also an annual sports meet organised where many colleges from the north-east India participate.
