Indian Institute of Technology Guwahati (IIT Guwahati or IITG), an autonomous institute for education and research in science, engineering and technology located in Guwahati, in north east India. History

The history of IIT Guwahati traces its roots to the 1985 Assam Accord signed between the AASU and the Govt. of India, which mentions the general improvement in education facilities in Assam and specifically the setting up of an IIT. The Assam Agitation denotes the period between 1979 and 1985 when the All Assam Students Union and the All Assam Gana Sangram Parishad led a popular agitational program to compel the government to identify and expel alleged illegal immigrants in Assam. ... IITG was established in 1994 by an act of parliament and its academic programme commenced in 1995.[1] The area identified for campus was on the norhtern bank of Brahmaputra River and was a swampy land. The construction of the campus began with landfilling procedures. The first academic building to be constructed was a temporary administrative block which came to be known as Transit Complex which began serving immediately as the center of academic as well as administrative activities. IIT Guwahati's campus is built on a 3 km² area, approx. 20 km from the heart of Guwahati. The majestic Brahmaputra lies on the south of the campus, with hills and open spaces sprinkled over the rest of the area. The Campus has facilities like the Academic Complex, Administrative building, Central Library and Computer Centre and the Student Activity Centre apart from faculty and staff residential buildings, a guest house and student hostels. IIT Guwahati is a fully residential campus. All the students live in hostels located in the campus. All these hostels have spacious single seater rooms and have all basic amenities like food mess, canteen, lounges, campus wide lan with internet access etc. The hostels are named after various rivers and tributries of north-east India. Annual Festivals

Every year, two major national level festivals are organised by the students of IIT Guwahati. The science and technological festival, Techniche, is held in the odd semester (beginning of September) while the cultural festival, Alcheringa, is held in the even semester (end of January). Alcheringa is the biggest cultural festival of its kind in the entire north-east India and draws crowds from all over India.


Apart from the two national level festivals, the students have an intra-IIT, inter-hostel cultural festival named Manthan (literally:churning), held every year in October. The annual sports meet Spirit is also organised each year and many colleges from the north-east India participate in this meet.
