Along with the engineering courses, IIT Roorkee also offers a 2 year residential MBA program. The Department of Management Studies also offers PhD in various disciplines. Admission for these courses are through JMET, a centralized entrance examination for the MBA programs at various IITs. IIT Roorkee is also running a MCA programme. Typically, the MCA is a 3 year fulltime degree course consisting of six semesters. It covers various aspects of computing, accounting, finance, programming, design and managing networks and databases. Admission for this course is through JAM(joint admission test), a centralized examination fot two-year MSc programmes at all IITs, Three-year MCA and M Tech in Applied Geology/ Applied Geophysics at IIT Roorkee, MSc-PhD Dual Degree in Physics at IIT Bombay and IIT Kanpur.

Academics - Degrees offered: The Institute offers Bachelor degree courses in 10 disciplines of Engineering and Architecture and Postgraduate degrees in 55 disciplines of Engineering, Applied Sciences, Architecture and Planning. The Institute has facility for doctoral work in all Departments and Research Centres. There are roughly 4200 students in the Institute across all programs. Around 375 faculty of international repute belonging to various science and engineering disciplines are engaged in teaching, research and consultancy activities here. With effect from 2003, integrated dual degrees are also offered, which means that students get both B. Tech and M. Tech degrees in 5 years rather than the customary 4+2 years.[citation needed]
- IIT-JEE: The entrance examination for undergraduate courses conducted jointly by the seven IITs and two other institutes namely IT-BHU, Varanasi (Institute of Technology, Banaras Hindu University) and ISM, Dhanbad (Indian School of Mining). It is amongst the toughest entrance examinations in the world. About 4,000 students are chosen from about 250,000 candidates.

There are two campus magazines brought out by the students of IITR namely "Watch Out" and "Kshitij". Thomso Thomso is the annual cultural festival of IIT Roorkee. Held over a period of 4 days, it sees participation from many colleges in North India. Besides inter-collegiate competitions in many cultural events, there are also performances by professional musicians and rock bands. The 2007 edition of Thomso will be held from 25 - 28 October.
Information Management Group IMG, an acronym for Information Management Group is a students’ group in IIT Roorkee. It provides technical solutions, tools, resources and knowledge for the enhancement of web applications and information resources, and other technical fields such as GIS, networking and security. The Information Management Group, (IMG), is called so, because by concept, it works on various programs related to the intellectual and managerial application in diversified disciplines. The group currently is responsible for the development of Information Resources and for the promotion of electronic culture in Indian Institute of Technology Roorkee. The team strongly believes in innovation, technology and networking. Strong linkages with academia, workplace professionalism, and in-house training and learning have helped IMG lay the foundation for growing into a big organization. Watch Out Official website Watch Out is the official students' news magazine of Indian Institute of Technology, Roorkee. It has its origin dating back to the year 1993 when Harjeet Singh Khanduja(Khandu), Anurag Gupta,Suttu and a few friends of his came up with a novel idea of a newsletter. First issue of Watch out was printed on Computer Stationery. Highlight of First issue was BJRU ke piche kya hai. Ten years down, Watch Out is now a part of the IIT-R ethos with every event on campus, however insignificant, finding a place in its pages. In order to achieve these unparalleled results over the last decade, WONA (Watch out News Agency) clubs itself into 5 sections: Web Cell, The Editorial Board, The News Bureau, The Finance Section and The Design Board.
Kshitij Kshitij, a literary student magazine of IIT Roorkee (formerly University of Roorkee) was founded on 14th Sept 1992. It works as a platform for promoting and nurturing the literary talent of the student community of the institute. Kshitij started as a Wall-Magazine in the Central Library of the institute.Now it also publishes a printed magazine. The first issue of this magazine was launched on 30th April 2004. Hostels Most students at IIT Roorkee live in the hostels, where a large number of extracurricular activities complement the hectic academic routine. The campus has nine hostels, of which two (Sarojini and Kasturba) are exclusively occupied by girls. Hostels in IIT Roorkee may accommodate undergraduate and graduate students along with Research Scholars. Students are assigned to hostels by the Institute Administration after their fresher year.
