Raiders of the Lost Ark, also known as Indiana Jones and the Raiders of the Lost Ark, is a 1981 adventure film directed by Steven Spielberg, produced by George Lucas, and starring Harrison Ford. It is the first in the Indiana Jones film and television series, and the twenty-fourth in internal chronology. In the film, the Nazis are searching for the lost Ark of the Covenant to make their army invincible, as it did for the Israelites of the Old Testament, and it's up to archaeologist and adventurer Indiana Jones to find it first. Lucas conceived the film while at the same time as writing Star Wars, due to to his interest in reviving 1930s cliffhanger serials. The film was a hit with audiences and critics alike, leading to two more films, Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom and Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade, the The Young Indiana Jones Chronicles television series, and a fourth film in production for release in 2008. Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom is an Academy Award winning 1984 action/adventure film directed by Steven Spielberg. First released on May 23, 1984, it is a prequel to the hugely successful adventure movie Raiders of the Lost Ark. Although this film is the second in the Indiana Jones series, it is the twenty-third in the chronology of film and TV productions about the adventures of the heroic fictional archaeologist. Like Raiders, it starred Harrison Ford as Jones, and was based on an original story by George Lucas. Many members of the original crew returned, including cinematographer Douglas Slocombe, editor Michael Kahn, and composer John Williams. New additions to the main cast included actress Kate Capshaw, who played the role of Wilhelmina 'Willie' Scott (Jones' second female lead following Karen Allen as Marion Ravenwood, in Raiders of the Lost Ark), and Jonathan Ke Quan as Jones' 11 year old sidekick Short Round. Featuring themes of child slavery, and destructive cult rituals, the film is darker in tone than its predecessor. The original story was intended to be a horror movie as well as a remake with elements of Gunga Din (1939). The original title was "Indiana Jones and the Temple of Death". DVD release The Young Indiana Jones Chronicles As detailed in the revised and updated edition of the book George Lucas: The Creative Impulse (by Charles Champlin), Lucas has been working for some time on drastically re-editing and restructuring the show for a DVD release. According to a statement by series producer Rick McCallum of Lucasfilm, this work has been 'ramped up' in order for a boxset release to tie in with the theatrical debut of "Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull" which the release date is May 2008. Amongst other extras, the discs will include approximately 100 new historical featurettes, now in production. Major structural changes are alleged to have been made to the show, including the complete removal of the 93 year old Jones 'bookend' sections, extensive re-shoots, and removal of complete episodes for better historical continuity.
