Influence peddling is the practice of using one's influence with persons in authority to obtain favors or preferential treatment for another, usually in return for payment. Also called traffic of influence.

The recent health insurance bill provides a striking example of how influence peddling degrades legislation that should serve the public and transforms it into legislation that benefits the few.
