In 2004, in the middle of a rising national conflict in the United States on the possibility of public health insurance, the Institute made the major news media by recommending unequivocally that the nation implement universal health coverage by the year 2010.

With their election, IOM members make a commitment to involve themselves in the work of the institute, which conducts studies and other activities addressing a wide range of issues in medical science, health services, public health and health policy.
