Encyclopedia > Institute of Notre Dame

The Institute of Notre Dame is an all-girls Catholic high school located in Baltimore, Maryland. The Institute of Notre Dame, known as "IND" or "the Institute" by those who are familiar with the school, was founded in 1849, making it the first school founded by the School Sisters of Notre Dame in the United States. The founder of the school is Mother Teresa Gerhardinger, now beatifed in the Catholic Church. The school is unique in the fact that it has stayed in its downtown location on Aisquith Street since its founding, despite the fact it is now in one of Baltimore's poorest neighborhoods. IND's current president is Sr. Mary Fitzgerald. Currently, around 400 girls attend the school. Some famous alumnae include politicans Nancy Pelosi (class of 1958) and Barbara Mikulski (class of 1963). This article is about the city in the US state of Maryland. ... The IND varisty lacrosse program this past season (2005) went undefeated in the regular season, but lost to Glenelg in championships. Seniors, Katie Brennan, Michelle Chartier, Erin Heldmann, Lizzy Jackson, Lauren Mastella, Deanna McFillin, Erin Quinn, Cara Tinelli, Emily Tognocchi, and Lauryn Wise added a very powerful dynamic to the team that will be greatly missed in the 2006 season. Hopefully, the rising seniors and juniors will fill the gaps in the team and bring success once again.

The Institute of Notre is very well known for its rivalry with Mercy High School. Once a year, the two schools' basketball teams match up to play a highly anticipated game in the Towson University gym. Over 2000 people have been known to attend.
