The Interior Plains is a vast region that spreads across the stable core (craton) of North America.
Throughout the Paleozoic and Mesozoic Eras the mostly low-lying Interior Plains region remained relatively unaffected by the mountain-building tectonic collisions suffered by the western and eastern margins of the continent.
The Interior Plains continued to receive deposits from the eroding Rocky Mountains to the west and Appalachian and Ozark/Ouachita Mountains to the east and south throughout the most recent Era, the Cenozoic.

Within the Coastal Division, which extends for about twenty miles inland along the entire length of the Maine Coast, conditions are tempered by the Atlantic Ocean, resulting in generally lower summer and higher winter temperatures than are experienced in the interior.
The Coastal Division encompasses these tourism regions: Southern Maine Coast, Greater Portland and Casco Bay, Mid-Coast, and Downeast and Acadia, while the Northern Interior includes Aroostook County and the Maine Highlands, along with the northerly portions of Maine Lakes and Mountains and the Kennebec and Moose River Valleys.
Average snowfall in Maine is 50 to 70 inches annually in the Coastal Division, 60 to 90 inches in the Southern Interior and 90 to 110 inches in the Northern Interior Division.
