Encyclopedia > Interlace (bitmaps)

Interlacing is a method of encoding a bitmap image such that a person who has partially received it sees a degraded copy of the entire image. When communicating over a slow communications link, this is often preferable to seeing a perfectly clear copy of one part of the image, as it helps the viewer decide more quickly whether to abort or continue the transmission. For the use of the term raster in radio regulation, see frequency raster. ...

Interlacing is supported by the following formats:

Interlacing is also known as "progressive" encoding, because the image becomes progressively clearer as it is received. However, there is no connection with the concept of interlaced or progressive scanning of video on CRTs. A rotating globe in GIF format. ... Interlacing is a method of displaying images on a raster-scanned display device, such as a cathode ray tube (CRT). ... Progressive scanning is a method for representing moving images on a display screen, where every pixel is represented in each frame. ... The initialism CRT has more than one use: In electronics, the cathode ray tube of a display device, such as a television In U.S. schools, the Criterion-Referenced Test In mathematics, the Chinese remainder theorem In computing, the C Run-Time Library In medicine, it means Corneal Refractive Therapy. ...

Interlace - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia (1942 words)
Interlacing is a method of displaying images on a raster-scanned display device, such as a cathode ray tube (CRT), in which the display alternates between drawing the even-numbered lines and the odd-numbered lines of each frame.
The combination of interlacing with block-based compression technique inherits all the drawbacks of the interlacing, while also reducing the efficiency of block-based compression.
Interlacing is still being included in new digital video transmission formats, such as DV, DVB (including its HD modifications), and ATSC.
Adam7 algorithm - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia (196 words)
Adam7 is the interlacing algorithm specified for use in PNG images.
Adam7 is a 2D interlacing scheme, unlike the 1D scheme used in an interlaced GIF.
This means the perceived quality of the image and the readablity of text in the image rises much faster in the early passes than with GIF interlacing (demo animation).
