Baby is allowed to determine the length of the feeding, which may be 10 to 20 minutes or longer, on one breast or two.
For example, a baby born small for gestational age may lead a mother to believe that her child needs to feed more than if it larger; they should, however, go by the demands of the baby rather than what they feel is necessary.
By stroking the baby's cheek with the nipple the baby will open its mouth and turn toward the nipple, which should then be pushed in so that the baby has a mouthful of nipple and areola; the nipple should be at the back of the baby's throat.
