Observation and history

The day was created and first celebrated in 1998, when the concept was proposed in the online pedophile and ephebophile community. Since then the day has become established and is regularly observed by members of the community.[1]

The originally suggested way of observing IBLD was to leave a small blue candle in a window or at a different public place together with a note explaining its purpose. Another activity that had been popularly suggested was to send anonymous notes to local newspapers. Today it is also used as a day of commemoration and reflection and different personal approaches are possible. Outside the community the day is seen in a critical light, as pedophilia is often brought into connection with cases of child sexual abuse and critics claim that the day is used to advocate child molestation and the breaking of the law or generally regard pedophilia as a perversion that they think should not be celebrated.[2][3] Child sexual abuse (CSA) is the sexual assault of a minor or, according to the American Psychological Association[1], sexual activity between a minor and an older person in which the dominant position of the older person is used to coerce or exploit the younger. ... A similar day is Alice Day, which is celebrated by female-attracted pedophiles and ephebophiles on April 25, the day Lewis Carroll met Alice Liddell, the girl for whom he wrote Alice's Adventures in Wonderland.
