An Emmy Award.

The Emmy Awards are United States television production awards, similar to the Peabody Awards but more focused on entertainment. There are two types of Emmy Awards, the Daytime Awards and the Primetime Awards. The National Academy of Television Arts & Sciences administers the Daytime Awards, the Academy of Television Arts & Sciences is responsible for the Primetime Awards. The first Emmy Awards were presented on January 25, 1949 at the Hollywood Athletic Club.

The name "Emmy" was a feminization of "immy", a nickname used for the image orthicon tubes that were common in early television cameras. The name was selected by a committee in 1948.

Regional Emmys

All regional divisions of the National Academy hand out their own awards, for local programming (with the ATAS serving the Los Angeles area). These awards often border in the mundane; a 2003 Suncoast (Florida and parts of Georgia, Mississippi, Alabama, and Louisiana) Emmy Award for Spot Coverage was awarded to coverage of a "Dump Truck Chase".

Other Emmys

It is the National Academy's honor to hand out Emmys for:

  • National TV newscats and documentaries
  • Sports programs and coverage
  • Business and financial reporting
  • Technology & Engineering
  • Public Service (for Public service announcements and whenever TV programs "advance the common good")

The International Emmys

The International Academy of Television Arts & Sciences hands out these awards which honor the best of non-US television. Finding these programs takes months; with judging events taking place at many international TV festivals. The best two programs from a particular genre in four regions are selected to go to a semifinal round, from which the nominees are derived. Every nominee is screened at a festival in New York the day before the awards ceremony.
