International Typographic Style, also known as Swiss Style, is a graphic design style developed in Switzerland in the 1950s that emphasizes cleanliness, readability and objectivity. Hallmarks of the style are the use of sans-serif fonts like Akzidenz Grotesk (and was the driving force behind the creation of two of the most popular modern sans-serif fonts: Univers and Helvetica), the use of grids, flush-left/ragged-right text and a preference for photography in place of illustrations or drawings. Many of the early International Typographic Style works also featured typography as design elements in addition to its use in copy, and it is for this that the style is named.
