There are 3 stages of interphase: G₁ in which the cell grows and functions normally. Once it grows too large it enters the synthesis (S) phase. In S phase the cell makes exact copies of its DNA. It is now ready for G₂ phase where it makes sure all of its chromosomes and organelles are ready for mitosis.

In that case, interphase takes about 23 hours and mitosis takes the other 1 hour. it is of variable duration depending on the function of the cell. It is the period which the cell normally carries out the functions of organelles, this causes the nucleoli to increase in size. Therefore, the time mitosis takes depends on the variety and size of the cell.
