Interstate 12 (abbreviated I-12) is an intrastate interstate highway located entirely within the state of Louisiana, United States. It starts in Baton Rouge, Louisiana (map) where it branches off of Interstate 10, travels along the North shore of Lake Pontchartrain, and ends at the intersection of Interstate 10 and Interstate 59 near Slidell, Louisiana (map). In 1993, the state legislature renamed Interstate 12 as the "Republic of West Florida Parkway". In 2003, signs identifying the highway's official name and bearing the flag of the Republic of West Florida were erected by the Louisiana Department of Transportation and Development in order to highlight the unique history of Louisiana's Florida Parishes. It is generally agreed that the highway should probably have been designated as a three digit interstate as it is really an I-10 bypass and access road and terminates at the transcontinental highway at both ends. Notes - With major damage to the I-10 Twin Span across Lake Pontchartrain from Hurricane Katrina, I-12 will be functioning as I-10 for the time being. On October 14, 2005 at 3:00 PM, the eastbound span of I-10 over Lake Pontchartrain was reopened to two way traffic. With the complete reopening of the I-10 Twin Span, I-12 has been relieved of much of the congestion that was clogging it from the Lake Ponchartrain Causeway to the junction with I-10 and I-59
- The state Department of Transportation is currently constructing a new interchange at Juban Road, just east of Denham Springs. Construction is slated to be complete in late 2007 or early 2008. [4]
