History In January 2004, the routes of I-495, I-95, and I-295 were changed. Previously, I-295 was an 11.02 mile (17.73km) long route through downtown Portland. Just north of Portland was Exit 15, which was a connector from I-295 to I-95 at its Exit 9. Between this connector and the Gardiner junction, the routes' numbers changed. The highway which was I-95 up to that point became I-495, the connector made up part of I-95, and I-295 north of Exit 14 became I-95. After the Gardiner junction, the merged highway continued with the route name I-95. Interstate 495 (abbreviated I-495) is the unsigned designation for the Falmouth Spur, a short freeway connecting Interstate 95 with Interstate 295 and U.S. Route 1 north of Portland, Maine, United States. ...

Following the 2004 changes, the situation was revised. The route which had previously been I-495 was re-routed as I-95, the Exit 9/14 connector became I-495 (but is currently unsigned), and I-295 was extended past Exit 14 to the Gardiner junction. Also, the exits were renumbered; previously they had been numbered more or less sequentially from south to north-- there were skipped numbers, for example, there was no Exit 23. After the changes, the exits north of Portland were numbered based on the mileage in relation to the Scarborough junction; the exits in Portland and South Portland remained the same. Exits on Maine's section of I-95 were similarly renumbered based on mileage. Other than the aforementioned I-495, I-295 currently has no spurs of its own. I-295's first exit is in South Portland, giving access to the Maine Mall (southbound) and U.S. Route 1 in South Portland and Scarborough (northbound); its last exit is Exit 51 (formerly Exit 28), which gives access to Gardiner. The route starts at Exit 44 (formerly Exit 6A) of I-95, and it has tolls just before its own Exit 1, and between Exit 51 and its northern terminus at I-95.
