Interstate 8 (abbreviated I-8) is an Interstate highway in the southwestern United States. It runs from the southern edge of Mission Bay at Sunset Cliffs Blvd. in San Diego, California (map), almost at the Pacific Ocean, to the junction with Interstate 10, just southeast of Casa Grande, Arizona (map). In California, especially from eastern San Diego County to points east, Interstate 8 runs very close to the United States-Mexico border. History

The highway was originally signed as U.S. Highway 80. It was approved as Interstate Highway System in 1960, and the first section was opened in 1964, when the US-80 became Interstate 8, includes full section of Mission Valley Freeway. The western extention to west of I-5 was completed in 1969 replacing part of Rosecrans Avenue which was originally signed as California State Highway 109 which was Ocean Beach Freeway. US 80 is an east-west United States highway. ...   • Throughout the entire length of Interstate 8, it only intersects one U.S. highway (US 95 in Yuma).
  • Much of I-8 in the Imperial Valley in California runs below sea level; in fact, at the New River near Seeley, CA, I-8 reaches the lowest land elevation in the entire Interstate system at -52 ft. (-16 m).
