Inwood is a census-designated place located in Nassau County, New York. As of the 2000 census, the CDP had a total population of 9,325.


Geography

Inwood is located at 40°37'9" North, 73°44'45" West (40.619240, -73.745705)1.


According to the United States Census Bureau, the CDP has a total area of 5.5 km² (2.1 mi²). 4.4 km² (1.7 mi²) of it is land and 1.1 km² (0.4 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 20.19% water.


Demographics

As of the census2 of 2000, there are 9,325 people, 3,041 households, and 2,253 families residing in the CDP. The population density is 2,117.9/km² (5,488.4/mi²). There are 3,132 housing units at an average density of 711.3/km² (1,843.4/mi²). The racial makeup of the CDP is 53.25% White, 25.87% African American, 0.42% Native American, 2.04% Asian, 0.02% Pacific Islander, 13.01% from other races, and 5.39% from two or more races. 26.32% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.


There are 3,041 households out of which 37.2% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 47.2% are married couples living together, 21.1% have a female householder with no husband present, and 25.9% are non-families. 21.7% of all households are made up of individuals and 12.1% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 3.06 and the average family size is 3.55.


In the CDP the population is spread out with 27.8% under the age of 18, 8.7% from 18 to 24, 30.7% from 25 to 44, 19.7% from 45 to 64, and 13.1% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 34 years. For every 100 females there are 88.5 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 83.0 males.


The median income for a household in the CDP is $41,334, and the median income for a family is $48,345. Males have a median income of $36,788 versus $28,482 for females. The per capita income for the CDP is $16,009. 14.6% of the population and 12.4% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 18.4% of those under the age of 18 and 13.7% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.

Inwood is a hamlet and census-designated place (CDP) in Nassau County, New York, United States.
Inwood is included among the Five Towns, an informal grouping of villages and hamlets in Nassau County on the South Shore of western Long Island adjoining the border with Queens County in New York City.
In addition to Inwood, the Five Towns is usually said to be comprised of the villages of Lawrence and Cedarhurst, the hamlet of Woodmere, and "The Hewletts", which consist of the villages of Hewlett Bay Park, Hewlett Harbor and Hewlett Neck and the hamlet of Hewlett.
