Cancer Therapy with Ion Beams (1353 words)
The most significant advantage of the therapy with ion beams is that it is possible to aim carbon ions directly at the tumor with great precision.
With light ions such as carbon, the high-LET effect occurs mainly at the end of the particle track, whereas in the entrance region, an almost normal regeneration ability of the cells is observed, similar to that under treatment with low-LET beams (X-rays, gamma beams, electrons, photons).
Heavy ion irradiation is especially indicated for patients with diseases in which conventional therapy yields only unsatisfactory results and where survival depends mainly on controlling the tumor.
