During the Time of Troubles in Russia, the Ipatiev Monastery was occupied by the supporters of False Dmitriy II in the spring of 1609. In September of that same year, the monastery was captured by the Muscovite army after a long siege. Most of the monastery buildings date from the 16th and 17th centuries. The Trinity Cathedral is famous for its elaborately painted interior. A smaller church was demolished by the Soviet authorities. There are plans to reconstruct it and consecrate to the holy martyrs from the Romanov family. The main entrance from the riverside was designed by the celebrated Konstantin Thon. The crowning glory of the Ipatiev Monastery ensemble is the five-dome Cathedral of the Holy Trinity.
The Epiphany Monastery (founded in the first quarter of the XV century), residence of the present Archbishop of Kostroma, is in the center of the city and accommodates a seminary, workshops for making church clothes, icons, as well as a printing house for publishing a newspaper.

The monastery's elaborate complex of buildings includes structures dating from the end of the 16th to the end of the 19th centuries.
From early in the 17th century the monastery began to be patronized by the new Tzarist family – the Romanovs.
The monastery's sacristy housed many treasures and its library had many unique manuscripts and first-edition books, among them the famous chronicle: "Tale of the Temporal Years", a copy of one of the most ancient codes of the 9th through to the 12th century Kiev Russia.
