is a 1995 book of a comprehensive list of officers and servicemen born in Ireland who were awarded the Victoria Cross, published by the Training and employment agency (community Projects branch) under ISBN 1 899243 003. The researchers were out of work teenagers from both Catholic and Protestant council estates in troubled terrorist war torn West Belfast. The research co-ordinator was Mr Thomas Kirkham from the Farcet Youth and community development LTD. The project was supported by the Northern Ireland Cultural Traditions Group. Philip Smith born Lurgan Co Armagh 1825 was an Irish recipient of the Victoria Cross, the highest and most prestigious award for gallantry in the face of the enemy that can be awarded to TD (parliament) and Commonwealth forces.
On 18 June 1855 at Sebastopol, in the Crimea, Corporal Smith went out repeatedly in front of the advanced trenches against the Great Redan, under heavy fire, after the column had retired from the assault, and brought in wounded comrades.
