Irene Manning -- star of screen, stage (558 words)
Manning, best known as the leading lady alongside Bogart in the 1942 action film "The Big Shot" and as the Broadway diva who sang with James Cagney in the 1942 musical "Yankee Doodle Dandy," died Friday at her home in San Bruno of respiratory complications.
Manning began her Hollywood career in 1936 with a kiss from Gene Autry in "The Old Corral." It would be the last time that Autry would kiss a leading lady on screen, as legend has it his fans demanded he only kiss his horse Champion in future films.
Manning abandoned her potential for the grand opera scene and instead pursued the silver screen and the Broadway stage.
