Irish Sign Language (ISL) is the sign language of Ireland, used primarily in the Republic of Ireland. It is also used in Northern Ireland, though Northern Ireland Sign Language (NISL) and British Sign Language are used mainly. Irish Sign Language is more closely related to French Sign Language than to British Sign Language, which was first used in Dublin. The Irish Deaf Society says that ISL "arose from within deaf communities", "was developed by deaf people themselves" and "has been in existence for hundreds of years", but according to Ethnologue the language originated in the period of 1846-1849. The Irish Deaf community regards ISL as the primary language of the community and in celebration of the European Year of Languages a calendar of events has been organised by the Irish Deaf Society to increase the public consciousness about the presence of ISL in Irish society.
Alternate sign languages are used in particular social, religious or cultural contexts by individuals and social groups whose primary language is a spoken language.
Having explained the nature of ISL briefly and its significance in the education system for the Irish Deaf community, it is clear that it is important to increase public awareness of Irish Sign Language.

For someone who wants to take sign language to a more serious level than just the basics then a course can be taken in sign language which is usually taken through a college and on completion a degree in sign language is given to those successfully completing it.
Sign language may come easier to babies than you would first think after all the muscles in there hands develop quicker than the ones they actually need for speech.
When beginning to sign with your baby choose simple ones to start with such as milk, eat and drink all things which relate at that time to your baby, this will give them ability to be able to ask for a drink or tell you that they are hungry.
