The Irish Transport and General Worker's Union (ITGWU) was established by Jim Larkin in December 1908 , after his expulsion from the British National Dock Labourers Union (NDLU). Soon most Irish NDLU members joined the new union, with the exceptions of the Derry and Drogheda branches, which stayed with the NDLU, and the Belfast branch, which split. The ITGWU was based in Dublin . It is remembered most for its involvement in the Dublin Lockout . The Irish Citizen Army, or ICA, was a small band of trained volunteers established in Dublin for the defense of worker’s rights.
This defeat and the harsh treatment given to the strikers by the Dublin Metropolitan Police, convinced James Connolly and others that it was necessary to organize the workers to defend themselves.
This was flown by the Irish Citizens Army during the 1916 rising.
