17th Century

During the 17th century the halfpenny bore the image of a harp on the obverse. One of the most curious specimens, and perhaps, the most debated and disputed specimen among numismatists and historians is the so-called St. Patrick Halfpenny. This coin may have been minted under Charles I of England or his son Charles II of England. Sometime prior to 1679 many of these were shipped to the Island of Manx. In 1679 on that island the coin was demonitized. A few years later, in 1681 a sunstantial quantity of them were exported to the colonies in America where John Newby a Quaker who emigrated to West New Jersey was instrumental in making them legal tender in his region. Irish pound - Facts, Information, and Encyclopedia Reference article (1233 words)
The Irish pound that appeared in 1928 was originally called the 'Saorstát pound' ("Free State pound") and was pegged to the Pound sterling; the currency was referred to as the 'Irish pound' from 1938 after the Constitution of Ireland changed the state's name.
The coin was almost identical in dimensions to the old penny coin that circulated before 1971, and was quite similar in diameter to, but thinner, than the half-crown coin.
During the early circulation of the coin, many payphone and vending machines which had been changed to accept the pound coin also accepted the old penny because of the similar size, the latter coin which was no longer legal tender and had little value to collectors.
Money (Great Britain) - Marteau (1800 words)
That year also saw the introduction of a new gold coin, assigned an official value of 20 shillings and soon to be known, unofficially, as the "guinea" (for its close connection with the gold supplies being brought to London by the Royal African Company).
This was England's first machine-manufactured or "milled" coin, more regular in size and weight than the old hand-manufactured or "hammered" coin, and marked with a serrated and inscribed edge designed to protect it from clipping.
Though many had pressed for the official value of silver coin simultaneously to be raised (perhaps to as much as 8s or 9s per ounce), the government of William III opted to retain the existing rate.
