He was born in Detroit, and received his undergraduate degree from the University of Michigan in 1944. After obtaining his Ph.D. from the University of Chicago in 1950, he went to MIT, where he has spent nearly all his career.
When Michael Atiyah and IsadoreSinger were awarded the Abel Prize by the Norwegian Academy of Science and Letters in 2004, the prize announcement explained the AtiyahâSinger index theorem in these words:
In papers written or published in the period around 1962-1965 the theorem was stated and proved by Michael Atiyah, Raoul Bott and IsadoreSinger.
To handle these operators, Atiyah, Patodi and Singer introduced global boundary conditions equivalent to attaching a cylinder to the manifold along the boundary and then restricting the domain to those sections that are square integrable along the cylinder.
