Encyclopedia > Island Beach State Park

Island Beach State Park is a New Jersey state park located just south of Seaside Park, New Jersey. The park is a nine-mile long stretch of nearly untouched barrier island. There are a few buildings in the park as well as a road that runs the whole length of the slender island. However, the land in the park remains largely in the state that all barrier islands along the Atlantic coast of North America were in before their development in the 19th and 20th centuries. The park represents the largest reserve of such unmodified barrier island in New Jersey. Coming in from the sea-front, a visitor ascends over a large primary dune covered in tall grasses and down into a narrow maritime forest, consisting of many tall bushes and short trees including holly, goldenrod and black cherry. Moving towards the bay side, one finds reeds and a muddy estuary that is home to blue crabs, herons and other marine birds. Visitors may swim, kayak and fish. For a fee, four wheel drive vehicles are allowed onto the beach. The entrance fee the day after Labor Day to the Friday before Memorial Day is $5.00, and otherwise, admission costs $6 on weekdays and $10 on weekends and a seasonal pass may be purchased for $50.
