Isle La Motte, Vermont

Isle La Motte is a town located in Grand Isle County, Vermont. As of the 2000 census, the town had a total population of 488.


Geography

According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 43.1 km˛ (16.7 mi˛). 20.6 km˛ (8.0 mi˛) of it is land and 22.5 km˛ (8.7 mi˛) of it is water. The total area is 52.22% water.


Demographics

As of the census2 of 2000, there are 488 people, 202 households, and 143 families residing in the town. The population density is 23.7/km˛ (61.3/mi˛). There are 415 housing units at an average density of 20.1/km˛ (52.1/mi˛). The racial makeup of the town is 97.75% White, 0.00% African American, 1.23% Native American, 0.20% Asian, 0.00% Pacific Islander, 0.00% from other races, and 0.82% from two or more races. 0.00% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.


There are 202 households out of which 27.7% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 59.4% are married couples living together, 8.4% have a female householder with no husband present, and 29.2% are non-families. 22.8% of all households are made up of individuals and 7.9% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.42 and the average family size is 2.85.


In the town the population is spread out with 25.0% under the age of 18, 4.3% from 18 to 24, 26.2% from 25 to 44, 27.3% from 45 to 64, and 17.2% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 42 years. For every 100 females there are 93.7 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 92.6 males.


The median income for a household in the town is $36,125, and the median income for a family is $41,094. Males have a median income of $28,542 versus $24,000 for females. The per capita income for the town is $20,286. 9.4% of the population and 7.7% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 11.5% of those under the age of 18 and 2.5% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.

In 1609 Samuel de Champlain landed at Isle la Motte on Lake Champlain close to the border with Quebec, and the island was the site of the first French settlement in Vermont in 1666.
During his years at Isle la Motte Light, Keeper Hill received awards for having the best kept station in the district.

Originally called Isle of Mott in its charter, but very early the original French form of the name was adopted, and usage has given it authority.
The fort was constructed under the supervision of Pierre de St. Paul, Sieur de la Motte and garrisoned by 300 troops of the Carignan Regiment, with la Motte in command.
Ichabod Fisk came to Isle La Motte in 1788 and settled in the southwestern part of town, where he developed the first marble quarry in the state.
