It was believed that the island was populated by demons and wild beasts. The demons and wild beasts would torment and attack any ships that passed or anyone that was foolish enough to wander on to the island.
The Isle of Souls, as it is known, is a volcanic island, at the center of the island the volcano still reaches the height of 18,000 feet above sea level, though it erupted violently in time out of memory, blowing several thousand feet off its top and creating an enormous fissure down the southern slope.
The dwarves came to the Isle of Souls hundreds of years ago and found rumors of its wealth of precious gems and minerals to be true.
Throughout the periodic human inhabitation of the Isle of Souls, a variety of reactions have been developed to counter the Beacon of Souls and the Whisper of Souls.
