It runs in parallel to the Isthmian League First Division North, and its champions are promoted to the Isthmian League Premier Division. History

The league was formed from a merger of the Isthmian League First Division and the Isthmian League Second Division at the end of the 2001-02 season. The idea was to reduce travel distance for teams in the Isthmian league. The Isthmian League First Division (also known for sponsorship reasons as the Ryman League First Division) is part of the Isthmian League, an English association football league. ... However, the creation of the Conference South redcued the number of teams in the Isthmian League, meaning only one First Division was necessary. The F.A., however, decided that there should be 6, rather than 4, 'step four' divsions of the National League System, again to reduce travel costs. As a result, the First Division South will be reformed for the 2006-07 season, taking teams from the various leagues below it. Conference South (often referred to as Nationwide South for sponsorship reasons) is one of the second divisions of the Football Conference in England, taking its place immediately below the Conference National. ... The decision as to whether or not a league should be admitted to, and if admitted, their position in the National League System shall be made by the LC and shall be final and binding.
A league that signifies its acceptance to be bound by these regulations must be in a position to promote and relegate clubs at the conclusion of each season.
However, in exceptional circumstances a league may seek approval from the LC to elect a club not currently in membership of a league within the National League System provided that there is: (a) a vacancy within its constitution (b) the club meets the entry criteria and (c) promotion and relegation issues have been satisfied.
