Encyclopedia > Italkian language

Italkian is a Jewish-Italian dialect that combines Hebrew and Italian, it has been spoken mainly between the 10th and the 17th centuries in Rome and in central and northern Italy (notably in Livorno).

Italkian is just one of the many Judeo-Italian dialects, most of them, such as giudeo-ferrarese, giudeo-mantovano, giudeo-modenese, giudeo-reggiano, and giudeo-veneto, are a mix of Italian with Hebrew or Yiddish.

Fewer than 4000 people today have basic knowledge of Italkian and only a small number of them are able to speak it fluently.
