Itatiaia is a Brazilian municipal district of the state of Rio de Janeiro. It is located to a latitude 22º29'46" South and a longitude 44º33'48" West, being the an altitude of 390 meters. Its population in 2004 belonged to 35870 inhabitants. It hosts the first brazilian National Park, called Parque Nacional do Itatiaia (PNI).
The Itaitiaia National Park is an Integral Protection Conservation Unit of the Mata Atlântica Biosphere Reserve in the states of Rio de Janeiro and Minas Gerais (see map).
Itatiaia was created in 1937, due to an initiative of the biologist Alberto Lofgren and is the first and oldest Brazilian National Park.
Either from Visconde de Mauá or from the village of Itatiaia, there are many hiking - trails connecting the Itatiaia lowlands with the Itatiaia mountain region.
