Generalić was born in Hlebine near Koprivnica in Koprivnica-Krizevci county. In elementary school the painting lessons were his greatest joy and allready as a child he used to earn money. Mostly, he draw with pencil on paper bags. In that form his sketches were seen by Krsto Hegedušić, at the time (1930) just a student of art academy, later the professor and renown art scholar. Hegedušić was impressed with Generalić's work so he organized his first public art exhibition which was held in 1931 in the 'Zagreb Art pavilion. Positive critiques and contacts at the time led to the new era in visual expressions not only in Croatia, but also around the world.
