Encyclopedia > Ivo of Chartres

Ivo (Yves) (born about 1040; died 1117) was bishop of Chartres from 1090-1117 and an important ecclesiastical figure and canon lawyer during the Investiture Crisis.


Ivo studied first in Paris and then at the Abbey of Bec in Normandy under Lanfranc where he would have met Anselm (like Lanfranc a future archbishop of Canterbury).


As bishop of Chartres and a canonist he opposed King Philip I's repudiation of his wife Bertha of Holland in order to marry Bertrade of Anjou in 1092. Ivo was briefly imprisoned for his opposition.


Ivo prepared two extensive canonical works, a Decretum and the Panormia (around 1094).

The printed works of Ivo of Chartres may be arranged into three categories; canonical writings, letters, and sermons.
But the most important feature of Ivo's work is perhaps his preface, "Prologus", which give new rules for solving the old problem of the discrepancies occurring in the texts of the Fathers and the councils.
The letters of Ivo, 288 in number (Merlet has added 40 more), from which we gather nearly all that we know of his life, are in the edition of Migne together with those of his correspondents.
