Born in Nottingham in 1925, Roberts was the son of a Welshman who had performed a trapeze act before the First World War and then worked as a tram driver and a cloth dyer, creating and selling the formula to stop sandbags from rotting.
On television, Roberts also guest-starred in The Bill (1993) and Touching Evil (1997), and provided the voice of Jesse in David and Saul, from the series Testament: the Bible in animation (1996).
Ivor's final television role in Peak Practice (1999) was screened after his death.
