He started out on drums,[1] but moved to guitar when he went on to found Dinosaur Jr. with bassist Barlow and drummer Emmett Jefferson 'Patrick' Murphy (aka 'Murph') in 1984 and achieved national success. His vocals have been described as "Neil Young-like"[2] and his guitar riffs as "monolithic." After Mascis dismissed Barlow from Dinosaur Jr. in 1989, he recorded several more Dinosaur Jr. albums until 1997, including the 1996 acoustic solo album Martin & Me. To honor the sonic legacy of alt/indie rock founding father J Mascis, Fender is supremely psyched to unveil the sparkling-new J Mascis Jazzmaster®; guitar.
Mascis took the instrument to a new place with his feedback-drenched, distortion-laden band, Dinosaur Jr.
Available beginning in July 2007, the J Mascis Jazzmaster is literally a sparkling new addition to the Fender lineup, in celebration of the adventurous and continuing sonic contributions of the man who has been the model’s constant champion for nearly 25 years now.
J Mascis (744 words)
J Mascis's emotions have always been at least as muddy as his guitar sound; they've just never been nearly as loud in the mix.
Because Mascis probably didn't have to bring his Martin acoustic out of the bedroom for a solo club tour to figure out that somehow the alterna-grunge revolution had left him, one of its early leaders, behind -- that someone, to be blunt, had blown it.
But unlike Bob, who's always used frustration as an effective muse, or Paul, who seems to be comfortably settling in to the older-and-wiser pro-songwriter routine, J managed to keep a big wall of distortion between himself and his doubts until he hit the road alone last year.
