Collins' childhood was spent in and around Maida Vale and was, according to Collins, an idyllic one with plenty of love, comfort and security. However her father was also a strict disciplinarian and exerted a strong hold over her subservient mother who overlooked his philandering. Elsa was said to be in awe and at the total behest of her husband, an attitude which came to irritate her daughters who sought to rebel against it. Collins has said of her father that 'He was detached, cold, hard, critical, difficult, acerbic and everyone had to please him.' He himself said 'I love my daughters but I am not the kind of parent who deludes himself that his children are superior to everyone else's. I did not think of them as outstanding in any way.' Collins has attributed much of her behaviour in later life as a desire to prove herself to a father figure. As an uninhibited and liberated young woman, she pursued men who seemed immune to her charms, then when they succumbed, they would be discarded. Maida Vale is a road in north-west London, and a district surrounding it. ...

At the age of 17 Collins was signed to the J. Arthur Rank Film Company, a highly profitable British studio and charm school.

However, Collins and Evans did not get along during the production, according to Collins, who wrote about her experience on the road in her column in the U.K. Daily Mail. The article was entitled, "Why I'll Never Work With Linda Evans Again," though Collins' veracity is often questioned on her versions of events, Collins having once previously accused Evans of knocking her unconscious and delivering a concussion during the famed 1983 lilypond catfight scene on Dynasty, despite the fact that no one connected to the show can recall these injuries to Collins occurring.[citation needed] Percy Gibson (b. ... Personal life

Graham Lord reports in his biography of Collins that she didn't lose her virginity until 18, a comparatively late age for one so sexually precocious. However she compensated for this 'late' start. In an interview with the Daily Mail on Monday August 20th, Collins was quoted as saying that in her time in Hollywood she went out with 'zillions and zillions' of men. Her sister Jackie was quoted as saying 'I think she did her own thing sexually.' Collins herself admits she was unfaithful 'but only only on location. It doesn't count on location. Everybody was having a little fling, I don't suffer very much from guilt.' The Daily Mail is a British newspaper and the oldest tabloid, first published in 1896. ...

On arrival in Hollywood she was propositioned by studio boss Darryl F. Zanuck who cornered her in a corridor and said 'You haven't had anyone till you've had me. I've got the biggest and the best and I can go all night.' Collins managed to escape from this encounter and at a later stage when he showed her the solid gold life-sized mold of his genitals that he liked to show impressionable girls, Collins responded with 'I've seen bigger things crawl out of cabbages.' Darryl Francis Zanuck (September 5, 1902–December 22, 1979) was a producer, writer, actor and director who played a major part in the Hollywood studio system as one of its longest survivors (the length of his career being rivalled only by that of Adolph Zukor). ...

By this time Collins had already been married and separated from her first husband, Maxwell Reed. She eventually divorced him in 1956 on her twenty-third birthday after he attempted to sell her to an Arab sheik. Her first serious boyfriend after Reed was Charlie Chaplin's son Sydney Chaplin however she left him for Arthur Loew Jr whom she moved in with after divorcing Reed. She began pestering the rich son of the MGM president to get married but he resisted, pointing out that Collins had said she would never marry again. The relationship was not perfect with Collins resenting that Loew had only given her a 'few pieces of jewelry' despite his wealth and him suspicious of her motives. When she went on location with Richard Burton, Loew assumed she would have an affair with the leading man she had idolized when younger. However she recoiled when she saw Burton's physique close-up, his face already appearing somewhat ravaged at the age of 30. She had an affair with a cameraman instead whom she described as the most exciting lover she had had so far. The relationship with Loew ended in a huge row at a New Year's party with Loew screaming at Collins 'you're a f**king bore' and Collins rejoining with 'and you're a boring f**k'. Collins then embarked on a three-year period in which she had so many lovers she was referred to as 'The British Open', at one point it was reported she had dated 14 men in a fortnight. She "enjoyed" dalliances with Conrad Hilton Jr., Dennis Hopper (who was only 18 at the time), Ryan O'Neal, Terence Stamp and Warren Beatty. Actor Rick Jason, in his autobiography Scrapbooks of My Mind stated that while he and Collins were working on a film together during this period, she bluntly propositioned him during lunch one day at the studio canteen (Jason claimed he turned her down). Collins later confessed that she was considered to be the most shocking girl in Hollywood and recalled how she was 'scorned, maligned, criticised and lied about for my fairly normal mode of living which was considered scandalous and disgraceful. All of a sudden I found myself with the reputation of a swinger and a home-wrecker. Beverley Hills wives were supposed to live in fear in case I cast my green orbs in the direction of their men. Ninety-nine per cent of this was total fabrication.' However just a few weeks after marrying his pregnant girlfriend, Julie Robinson, Harry Belafonte consummated his flirtation with Collins in Los Angeles, Collins having set out to seduce him. At the time of the 'three night stand' with Belafonte, Collins was also having an affair with notorious playboy and former husband of Elizabeth Taylor, Nicky Hilton. At 26, she embarked on a serious affair with an as then unknown Warren Beatty which would last for two years, at 22 he was four years younger than her and already Collins was showing her taste for younger men. Their affair began on their first date and was a passionate one, reportedly they could make love up to seven times a day. After four months Beatty moved in and revelling in the stability of a deep, stable love-affair they made plans to marry. However when Collins fell preganant and wanted to keep the baby, problems arose with Beatty insisting on an abortion, believing that a baby would harm his career. Despite this, or perhaps because of guilt, Beatty proposed shortly afterwards and Collins gladly accepted before flying to Rome to make the film 'Esther and the King'. Their time apart though was not pleasant though with mutual suspicion and anxiety. In 1961 she accompanined Beatty to London for the filming of 'The Roman Spring of Mrs Stone', though it was only a suspicion at the time, it was later confirmed by one of his girlfriends Madonna that Beatty had indeed had an affair with co-star Vivien Leigh. Along with Collins tiring of Beatty's constant demands for sex and his career taking off while hers declined, the relationship was unwinding and fell apart after Beatty's well-publicised affair with Natalie Wood, then married to Joan's great friend Robert Wagner. 50 years later, the end of the affair still rankled with Collins who when asked in interview if it was true they made love seven times a day replied 'maybe he did, but I just lay there.' It must be noted that Collin did not succumb to the avaracious advances of every male and left Dean Martin banging on her hotel door yelling 'let me in baby, you owe me one'. Collins believed her reputation as a swinger harmed her career and her turbulent love-life sometimes left her depressed. She regularly consulted an astrologer who told her that one day she would be very successful and always saved from physical and financial diaster at the eleventh hour, but that she would never be happy or lucky in love. The gossip mills were set ablaze when Collins walked away from Hollywood and a successful career in the early 1960s to marry Anthony Newley, an award winning singer, actor and film composer. With Newley she had two children, a daughter, Tara (now a housewife) and a son, Sacha (who is now a highly regarded artist).
