Dalrymple graduated with honors from Yale University in 1970 with a bachelor's degree in American Studies and then returned to North Dakota to manage the farming operations.
Dalrymple came to the North Dakota Legislature in 1985, representing a rural Cass County House district.

Jack Dalrymple said that using the interest earnings for Centers of Excellence would provide the program with long-term support and ease worries some lawmakers have about funding the program.
Dalrymple presented the idea Monday as he testified for Centers of Excellence in front of the Senate Appropriations Committee.
Dalrymple said there is no way of knowing how many projects will be approved, but he said it is good to have money available as projects come along.
