Greene was born on January 7, 1930, in Maryville, Tennessee. He started his music career as a vocalist in Ernest Tubb's band, The Texas Troubadors. Tubb encouraged him to pursue a solo career, and Greene achieved great success right away. In 1967, he received the prestigious awards for Male Vocalist of the Year, Single of the Year, and Album of the Year from the Country Music Association.
