As an enforcer for the Chicago crime syndicate Cerone had been arrested over 20 times on charges including armed robbery, bookmaking, illegal gambling, and embezzlement by the time he had been appointed "Don" of the Chicago Outfit following Tony Accardo and Joey Aiuppa's semi-retirement from active leadership of the organization. During the 1950s Cerone was a chauffeur to Accardo before later serving under Sam Giancana as a protege, becoming a leading hitman responsible for the death of loan shark William "Action" Jackson. In 1986 Cerone, with Aiuppa, Nick Civella, and Carl DeLuna were convicted of skimming $2 million from Las Vegas casinos. Robbery is the crime of seizing property through violence or intimidation. ... Cerone and Aiuppa agreed on Williams, and we then traveled to New York to see Salerno.
Cerone and Aiuppa had other candidates for the position and told us that they did not want Presser because he was an informant.
Maishe asked Cerone how he knew Presser was an informant, but all he would say is that he "just knew." We left Chicago with the promise from Cerone and Aiuppa that they would think about Presser and let us know in a week or so.
