Encyclopedia > Jacobite Reliques

Hogg's Jacobite Reliques is a collection of Jacobite protest songs compiled by James Hogg on commission from the Highland Society of London in 1817. Scholars speculate as to how many of the songs were authored or at least substantially altered by Hogg himself.

Several of the songs included gained new popularity in the 20th century through performances by Steeleye Span - most notably Cam Ye O'er Frae France and Rogues in a Nation.

Reliques was first published in 1819. An edited version was published as The Jacobite Relics of Scotland in 2002 (volume I ISBN 0-7486-1592-X; volume II ISBN 0-7486-1591-1).

Jacobitism - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia (5647 words)
Jacobitism was the political movement dedicated to the restoration of the Stuart kings to the thrones of England and Scotland (and after 1707, Great Britain).
Jacobitism was a response to the deposition of James II and VII in 1688 when he was replaced by his daughter Mary II jointly with her husband William of Orange.
A year later the Jacobites were forced to agree to a truce while the Clan chieftains sent requests to the exiled James VII and II for permission to submit to William, and in January 1692 the Jacobite Clans formally surrendered to the government.
