History

The National Council of Education (NCE) was set up in 1906 to impart literary, scientific and technical education on a national basis. The year was significant in Bengal's history as the province had just been partitioned by Lord Curzon, the Governor-General of India, into East Bengal on the one hand (the area that was eventually to become Bangladesh in 1971) and West Bengal and Orissa on the other. This was an extremely unpopular move by the British and was ultimately reversed in 1911, but much damage had been done to Bengal's sensibilities in the meantime. In 1906, a group of Bengali intellectuals including Rabindranath Tagore, Aurobindo Ghosh, Raja Subodh Chandra Mullick and Brajendra Kishore Roychowdhury decided that they would protest the partition of Bengal by setting up an institution that would challenge British rule by offering education to the masses 'on national lines and under national control'. Almost on the same day a rival organisation, the Society for Promotion of Technical Education in Bengal, was set up by Taraknath Palit,^[1] and under it the Bengal Technical Institute came into being on 25 July 1906. The two organisations fought it out for a few years until the SPTE was amalgamated with the NCE in 1910 and the Bengal Technical Institute passed into its hands. The University Emblem

The Emblem of the University is a three - flamed lamp encircled by Lotus petals. The Lamp represents Knowledge. The three flames represent-Intellectual Training, Cultivation of Emotions and Imagination, and Spiritual Development. Petals of the Lotus on the periphery represent Fine Arts and Culture. The logo had been designed by the Late Nandalal Bose, the Great Artist of the Bengal School of Painting, who had also been one of the Great Teachers of Kala Bhavan in Rabindra Nath Tagore's Santiniketan. Organization

The academic departments in JU are organised under three Faculties, viz, Faculty of Arts, Faculty of Engineering & Technology and Faculty of Science. Each faculty is headed by a Dean who ensures interdepartmental coordination for proper implementation of the guiding principles formulated by the Faculty Councils, while the constituent departments are under the administrative control of respective Heads of the Departments, who function under the policies framed by the Boards of Studies. The Vice-Chancellor is the chief academic and administrative officer of the university, and is elected from amongst the professors for fixed terms. The Governor of the state of West Bengal is the ex-officio Chancellor of the University, and as such wields no administrative power. Aurobindo Bhavan - the administrative block on main campus

Jadavpur University is one of the few universities in Kolkata to have two distinct walled off campuses, in Jadavpur and Bidhan Nagar. The Jadavpur campus is pressed for space, but is green with ponds, playing fields, and tree groves. It also has a windmill and limited residential space for staff and students. Jadavpur University is a teaching institution and the interaction between students and teachers is close and informal. Classes are comparatively small for an Indian university and contact hours are abundant. Recently the arts and science faculties were converted to the semester system of teaching (the engineering faculty was already following it) and with the demise of the old annual system a much greater flexibility in course design and subjects covered has become possible.

Clubs

• Photographic Club

The JU Photographic Club is of its kind in the whole of Asia, and has won many laurels, both national and international. It has its own darkrooms, studio and exhibition facilities. Most importantly, it has a full-fledged training programme with qualified trainers. The Club organises intra-club and All India Inter-Club contests, photography exhibitions and photographic rambles in addition to offering low-cost photographic facilities.

• Music Club

Besides conducting competitions and musical programmes, the Music Club organises singing and dance classes. It has an excellent students' choir which presents songs and music at important University programmes and ceremonies including the Convocation and the students' fests (Sanskriti). The Debating Society has produced a band of debaters of all-India repute. It organises inter-department debate and quiz competitions, and occasionally inter-college programmes as well.

• Enquiry - The JU Quiz Club

Enquiry - The JU Quiz Club was launched in the year 2001 and has now become one of the most active clubs on campus. It is best known for Qriosity - its annual quizzing event, in which variuos institutions from across the country participate.

• Film Society

The Jadavpur University Film Society is recognised by the Indian Film Federation. It has its own projection room and library. It organises a number of screenings of famous and award-winning films round the year, as well as an annual film festival over 3-4 days. It also publishes its own journal, 'Katha, Galpa, Chhabi'.

• Drama Club

The Drama Club organises theatrical functions at regular intervals. These include formal plays and dance dramas as well as group theatre and street drama. It also conducts drama workshops, and holds exhibitions and poster exhibitions on drama and theatre. It should also be noted that for the last nine years, students of the Department of English have been staging full-length English plays annually. This revives a long-standing tradition of English theatre in that Department.

• Art and Literary Society

The Art and Literary Society publishes a magazine, 'Sandhi'. It organises recitation and essay competitions, group discussions, book exhibitions, cultural programmes etc. for the students.

• Mountaineering and Hiking Club

This is a particularly active club. So far, it has conducted six major Himalayan expeditions, in course of which quite a few students have scaled heights of 20,000 feet and above. Every year, the Club organises rock climbing courses at elementary and basic level, and also arranges trekking expeditions during the Puja vacation.

• Painting Club

The Painting Club organises poster exhibitions from time to time on various themes. It also conducts painting workshops for the students.

• Science Club

For the last 13 years, the Science Club has been organising the annual 'Tech-Fair' on the University campus. Although the Fair presents all aspects of technology, its underlying purpose is to create a social motivation among the students to develop technology in the interest of the masses. The Club also conducts seminars and organises lectures on scientific subjects and controversies. It publishes its own magazine, 'Anveshan'. It participates in various science fairs.

• Chess Club

The interest of a large body of students led to the formation of this club a few years ago, but its activities have yet to take off.

• Karate Club

The Karate Club was set up under the aegis of the Ranajoy Karlekar Memorial Centre, which began organising karate and self-defence classes for interested students on campus from 1999. The Club has been functioning successfully for over two years now. In January 2001, it conducted an international karate workshop attended by over 100 participants.

• Students' Society of Architecture, JU (SSAJU)

This society, set up by the students of architecture, functions within the Department of Architecture. It organizes annual reunions, seminars and exhibitions of students' projects from time to time. It also publishes an annual magazine 'Image'.

• Environment Groups

The students have formed groups for contributing to the upkeep of the campus and protecting the environment. These groups operate under such names as Habitat and Green Club. In addition to campus cleaning programmes, they undertake tree planting and tree labelling activities.

Canteens

The Jadavpur University canteens - Milanda's Canteen, Amenities Centre (AC) canteen, CET Canteen, Staff Canteen and Ashirbaad Canteen - have added to the Bengali gastronomy by the introduction of "Dhoper chop", a term which is used today both for an item of food, or to signify "bluff" or "blarney". The dish is in essence a sort of scotch egg --- except that it contains half an egg, the other half being made up of mashed potatoes, vegetables and bread crumbs.

Student Unions

Student politics is an integral part of campus life in JU. Students are vocal about their rights, often leading to standoffs with authorities. In the science and engineering faculties, the students have political organizations unaffiliated with any major political party, We The Independents (WTI) and Democratic Students' Front (DSF) respectively, that run the student unions in the respective faculties. Sanskriti - The Annual Culfest

Jadavpur University hosts one of the oldest college cultural festivals in Eastern India, "Sanskriti." The three back to back cultural festivals of the three faculties which take place in March, are unique among college cultural festivals for their showcasing of Bengali culture. Many eminent singers, musicians and rock bands from India, as well as neighbouring countries like Bangladesh are invited to perform in the fest. The Second Campus

The Salt Lake campus is smaller, and is host to the curtain-raiser (opening programme) of the university cultural festival Sanskriti. It is home to five of the engineering departments of the university and has a cricket field on campus maintained by the CAB (Cricket Association of Bengal) on which Ranji Trophy matches are played during cricket season.
