Nephrite and jadeite jade ranges in color from a somewhat greasy-appearing, white ("mutton fat jade") to dark and light shades of green, gray, blue-green, lavender, yellow, orange, brown, reddish-brown, and fl.
Dying white jade to a mauve or green color (particularly to an imperial jadecolor) is the most common treatment.
Color, transparency and the uniformity of both of these are of principle importance when judging the material.
Its color represents loyalty; its interior flaws, always showing themselves through the transparency, call to mind sincerity; its iridescent brightness represents heaven; its admirable substance, born of mountain and of water, represents the earth.
Therefore jade is not carved, it is ground and polished.
Jade is ground wet because it gives off an asbestos like fiber dust when worked that can be harmful to the lungs.
