It had an iron block and an aluminum cylinder head which delivered 160 bhp at a compression ratio of 8:1, rising to 210 bhp with the C-Type head as raced at Le Mans. The 4.2 litre version was officially released in 1965, though racers had been boring the 3.8 out all the way to 4.2 litres for years. The official bore was 93mm, and the engine produced from 170hp(DIN) in the Series 2 XJ6, to 265hp(Claimed) in the E-Type.

This name was given to the entire company when SS Cars Ltd was renamed Jaguar Cars Ltd after World War II because of the unfavourable connotations of the initials "SS" (from their use by the Schutzstaffel in Nazi Germany).
