Jalapa is a city in Guatemala. It is the capital of the department of Jalapa. It is located 174 km from the city of Guatemala. Jalapa is a department of Guatemala, in the south east of the republic. ...


However, there is a shorter road from Guatemala city to Jalapa using Atlantic Highway and then going south (exit toward Sanarate city). This way Jalapa City is only around 97 kilometers, from Guatemala City.

The city of Jalapa was built on a Valley, surrounded by the Jumay volcano and the mountains of Alcoba, Arluta and the Jalapa Mouuntains. For this reason and its altitude 4468 feet (1361 meters) the inhabitants enjoy an excelent weather, which is mild temparete, for this reason Jalapa ins Known as the: "climatologic of the west". It is never too cold and never too hot. Its economy is based on agricultural and livestock products. The department of Jalapa produces corn anf beasn which are the main diet of guatemalans, but also produces fruits as peaches, apples, blackberries, bananas, avocados and vegetables as cabbage, lettuce, broccoli, coliflower among other products, most of them are exported to El Salvador. Jalapa also produces dairy products and is famous for its cheese, special the one called queso seco (dry cheese)and "mantequilla de costal" (butter of cotton sacks), which is produced mainly in Monjas, San Manuel Chaparron, San Carlos Alzatate and Jalapa.
