James Aloysius O'Gorman, a U.S. Senator from New York was born in New York City on May 5, 1860.He attended the public schools and the College of the City of New York. O`Gorman graduated from the law department of New York University in 1882 and was admitted to the bar the same year. He became justice of the New York District Court in 1893 and served as justice of the New York State Supreme Court from 1900-1911. He was elected as a Democrat to the United States Senate and served from March 4, 1911, to March 3, 1917. He was Chairman of the Committee on Interoceanic Canals and president of the New York County Lawyers’ Association.
